Ryan KellyHorticulture 100Professor Bartz7 December 2018Written Summary 1.Successive Vegetable Garden a.For my first successive garden I planted Kale from April to May, carrots from June to July, and lettuce (crisphead) from August to September. For my second successive garden I planted onions from April to August (spring to summer) and spinach from September to October (summer to fall). For my last successive garden, I planted peas from April to June (Spring) and corn from June to September (summer to fall). In my first successive garden, common pests for kale include slugs, snails, and the diamondback moth. For carrots, common pests include the carrot rust fly, snails, and slugs. For lettuce (crisphead), common pests include cutworms, snails, and slugs. 2.Beneficial Habitat Gardena.For the carrots in my garden, one of their pests are the aphids. To manage and protect the carrots I have planted calendula by my carrots to attract predators of the aphids like lady beetles and lacewings. Kale also have aphid pests but more specifically cabbage worms. Therefore, Ive planted cleome, a flowering plant, to help attracts natural predators of cabbage worms like the lady beetle. For my lettuce, their pests are cutworms. Cutworms natural predator are birds that come and eat them like the song birds. So I planted dahlia to attract the birds so they can eat the cutworms. The last beneficial plant I planted was some osteospermum because one of the pests for onions include aphids. One of the predators for aphids are lady beetles which are attracted to nectar in the osteospermum and they feed on the aphids.3.Fruit Garden a.The first fruit I planted was cranberries. Some of the pests to be looking for would include snails, slugs, and aphids. One way to treat pests like slugs are to monitor slug activity by digging narrow holes 4 inches (10 cm) wide and 6 inches (15 cm) deep, covered with a small board.
