About this Garden Plan

Well-rotted cow manure above cardboard using Charles Dowding's no-dig no till gardening methods. I'm trying out celery, broccoli, asparagus, sage, and basil for the first time this year and adding 3 new beds on the upper right with the corn and strawberries. I will need to thin into neater rows my existing raspberries. I need to source more manure and compost for my beds to allow them to be deeper, and more wood chips and cardboard for my pathways and expansion this year. Lots of work ahead for my garden before I can plant at the end of May!

Plant List

 PlantNumberSpacingSpacing in RowsNotes
Asparagus 131' 5"1' 5" x 1' 5"Set out dormant 1-year old roots, called crowns, in late winter or early spring. A few varieties can be grown from seed.
Basil 67"5" x 9"Make a late spring planting of seedlings started indoors or purchased. In summer, after the soil is warm, sow more basil wherever you want it to grow
Broccoli 131' 5"1' 5" x 1' 5"Sow indoors in early spring, and set out while the soil is still cool. Sow fall broccoli indoors in summer, and set out when the plants are 3 weeks old.
Carrot
 Tendersweet Long Hybrid Carrot
603"3" x 5"Sow direct into soil in spring (all at once - no succession planting in our area!)
Carrot
 Rainbow Blend Organic
603"3" x 5"Sow direct into soil in spring (all at once - no succession planting in our area!)
Carrot
 Nantes Touchon
1083"3" x 5"Sow direct into soil in spring (all at once - no succession planting in our area!)
Celery
 Cutting
167"5" x 11"Sow indoors in early spring, and set out transplants when they are big enough to handle.
Corn
 Spancross Hybrid Corn
361' 1"11" x 1' 5"Wait until the soil is warm to sow sweet corn. Soak seeds in water overnight before planting them 1 inch deep and 6 inches apart. Thin to 12 inches apart when the plants are 6 inches tall.
Cucumber
 Green Sweet Hybrid Burpless Or
121' 11"1' 11" x 1' 11"Easily grown from seeds sown directly in the ground, or start seeds indoors and set plants out when they are 3 weeks old.
Cucumber
 Earliest Mincu Cucumber
121' 11"1' 11" x 1' 11"Easily grown from seeds sown directly in the ground, or start seeds indoors and set plants out when they are 3 weeks old.
Garlic 135"3" x 9"In fall, plant individual cloves 4 inches deep with the pointed ends up. Cover the planting with at least 3 inches of mulch.
Kohlrabi 89"7" x 11"Sow in early spring indoors, or outdoors when the weather is warm but the soil is still cool.
Lettuce (Crisphead)
 Buttercrunch
129"7" x 11"Start seeds indoors in early spring. Set plant out at proper spacing while soil is still cool.
Lettuce (Leaf)
 Romaine
1713"3" x 5"Start seeds indoors in early spring. Set plant out at proper spacing while soil is still cool.
Marigold 117"7" x 7"Sow marigolds in late spring, or set them out as bedding plants. Broadcast seed into cultivated soil so that the seeds are about 2 inches (5 cm) apart and one-half inch (1 cm) deep. Thin to 8 inches (20 cm) apart in all directions for dwarf varieties; allow 12 inches (30 cm) between very tall varieties.
Mexican Sunflower 201' 1"1' 1" x 1' 1"Mexican sunflowers are easily grown from seed started in late spring. Do not rush, because the plants will not grow in cold soil. Expect seeds to germinate within 10 days when sown indoors. Set out seedlings when they are about 6 weeks old. Or, direct-sow seeds where you want the plants to grow in late spring and thin to proper spacing. Crowded seedlings are easy to dig and transplant provided they are watered well. Mexican sunflowers tolerate humid heat well, but they do require steady light moisture. Locate them that is easy to reach with water.
Nasturtium 811"11" x 11"Soaking seeds in water overnight prior to planting may speed germination, but nasturtium seeds sprout best when the soil is warm. Poke seeds into the soil about 1 inch (3 cm) deep and 3 inches (8 cm) apart. Thin to 12 inches (30 cm) apart in all directions.
Onion
 Candy
965"3" x 7"If you don't start your own seeds, set out sets (small dormant bulbs) or pencil-size seedlings in spring, while the soil is still cool.
Onions (Green)
 White Lisbon
373"3" x 3"Start seeds indoors in late winter to early spring when growing cold-hardy bunching varieties. Or, plant large sets close together and harvest the plants when young.
Peas
 Sugar Snap
483"3" x 7"Soak seeds in water overnight before sowing 2 inches deep and 2 inches apart. Thin plants to proper spacing after the seeds germinate.
Peas
 Cascadia Sugar Snap
323"3" x 7"Soak seeds in water overnight before sowing 2 inches deep and 2 inches apart. Thin plants to proper spacing after the seeds germinate.
Potatoes (Early)
 Caribe Potatoes (Very Early)
261' 3"1' 1" x 1' 7"Grow from sprouting potatoes or seed potatoes, cut into chunks so that each piece has 2 growing "eyes," or sprouts. Let the cut pieces dry for a day before planting 3 inches deep.
Potatoes (Maincrop)
 Sangre Mid to Late Season
421' 5"1' 1" x 2' 5"Grow from sprouting potatoes or seed potatoes, cut into chunks so that each piece has 2 growing "eyes," or sprouts. Let the cut pieces dry for a day before planting 3 inches deep.
Raspberry 662' 3"1' 11" x 2' 11"Plant in mid-fall or early winter when it's not too cold for a little root growth to help them establish. After harvesting cut the canes down to ground level, leaving any new shoots.
Sage 511"11" x 1' 3"Start with a purchased plant, or start seeds indoors in early spring. Plants started from seed may not bloom their first year.
Strawberry 161' 7"1' 5" x 1' 11"Set out plants in early spring. Take care not to bury the central crown when transplanting. In fall and again in early spring, topdress established plants with rich compost or an organic fertilizer. Allow plants to rest in midsummer.
Sunflower
 Teddy Bear
2311"11" x 11"Sow sunflowers from late spring to early summer. Where summers are long and warm, make a second sowing for autumn harvest. Poke seeds into the soil about 1 inch (3 cm) deep and 3 inches (8 cm) apart. Thin to 12 inches (30 cm) apart in all directions for dwarf varieties. Extremely tall sunflowers or those that grow into multi-branched bushes may require 3 feet (1 meter) between plants.
Tomato (Small)
 Gigantico Sweet 100 Cherry Tom
02' 11"2' 11" x 2' 11"Start seedlings indoors or start with purchased plants. Set out after the last frost has passed, when the soil is warm and settled.
Zucchini
 Dark Green Zucchini Organic
21' 11"1' 11" x 1' 11"Sow seeds 1 inch deep in spring, either in rows or hills. Also may be started from seedlings started indoors or purchased at stores.
