Plant List

 PlantNumberSpacingSpacing in RowsNotes
Basil
 Genovese
1211"5" x 9"Basil has been VERY prolific.
Beans (Bush Snap)
 Blue Lake
109"5" x 1' 1"8/4/2007 Beans are up but the slugs are having a field day. Sprinkled diatomaceus earth.
Beans (Bush Snap) 209"5" x 1' 1"Seeds sown 7/25/2017. Up in 3-4 days.
Beans (Pole)
 State Half Runner
169"5" x 1' 1"Sow in place 1-2" deep. Heirloom seeds from Baker Creek 2017. These beans were a disappointment. See notes about Rattlesnake beans for details.
Beans (Pole)
 Rattlesnake
169"5" x 1' 1"Sow in place 1-2" deep. Soak seeds for 1-2 hours before planting to speed germination. Sow batches of seeds 2 weeks apart to extend growing season. Heirloom seeds from Baker Creek 2017 These plants were a disappointment. Very slow to grow, lots of slug damage, very little production. 90 days after planting and I'm still only getting a couple of beans every few days. It takes a week of harvesting to get enough beans for one meal.
Beet
 Detroit Golden
105"3" x 7"
Beet 205"3" x 7"
Carrot
 Scarlet Nantes
243"3" x 5"
Chili Pepper 121' 1"11" x 1' 3"
Corn
 Argent
601' 1"11" x 1' 5"Got seeds from Southern States in Pittsboro. Seeds planted around 5/19/2017 Japanese Beetles have been a problem since July. 8/1/2017 - Picked 7 ears 8/2/2017 - Picked 6 ears - one was completely chewed up by bigger beetles and went into the compost heap 8/3/2017 - Raccoons!!! They destroyed several stalks. No idea how many ears they got. Put up a low electric fence. Picked 13 ears. 8/4/2017 - More raccoon damage. They left at least 4 ears around to let me know they had been there. Cleaned up all the damaged or empty stalks to make it easier to see if they've been in there. Picked 4 more ears.
Cucumber
 Marketmore 76
51' 11"1' 11" x 1' 11"Plant after last frost. Sow in place 1" deep and 6-10" spacing http://www.almanac.com/plant/cucumbers VERY successful production. Cucumbers coming out my ears! Plant fewer next year. These had fewer seeds than the Munchers and were better for pickling. Just need to pick them sooner when they are smaller. 8/2/2017 - plants are really beginning to die back now. Only expect to get a few more cucumbers and then pull them up.
Cucumber
 Muncher
51' 11"1' 11" x 1' 11"60-65 days to maturity. Nearly spineless fruit is 6-8" long and up to 3" wide. For pickling, harvest when fruit is only 4-6" long. VERY successful growing. Cucumbers coming out my ears! Plant fewer next year. These had more seeds than the Marketmores and so were better for general slicing.
Lettuce (Leaf)
 Salad Mix
163"3" x 5"
Lettuce (Leaf) 153"3" x 5"
Lettuce (Leaf)
 Black-Seeded Simpson
173"3" x 5"
Marigold 247"7" x 7"
Marigold
 Petite Mix
247"7" x 7"Slow to take off but once they got going the plants are quite bushy. Seem to be doing their job of protecting the tomatoes. Next year, sow indoors for transplanting.
Mint 17"5" x 9"
Nasturtium
 Alaska Red Shades
1211"11" x 11"Heirloom seeds from Baker Creek 2017 Planting depth - 1/2" 7-10 days for germination Grows to 8" height Cut off faded/dead flowers to extend blooming season Very poor germination rate. Plants never got more than a few inches tall. Ended up buying nasturtiums from the garden center.
Onion 135"3" x 7"Zero production but that was completely my fault. Bought them but didn't plant them at the proper time.
Parsley 25"3" x 9"
Peas 293"3" x 7"
Peas
 Sugar Daddy
293"3" x 7"
Pepper 101' 1"11" x 1' 3"
Potatoes (Early)
 Rose Blush Gold
51' 3"1' 1" x 1' 7"This variety is an improvement on Rose Finn Apple. Can set up to 15 tubers on medium-large plants. When cooked, expect firm flesh with buttery flavor. Holds color and flavor well in storage. Seed potatoes came from Southern States in Pittsboro. Planted in bags on 3/3/2017.
Potatoes (Early)
 Red Norland
31' 3"1' 1" x 1' 7"65-75 days to maturity. Eat within 2-3 months of harvest. Best dug early for baby roasting potatoes. If left in the ground longer than 80 days, expect tubers to start rotting and deteriorating in quality. Seed potatoes came from Southern States in Pittsboro and were planted in bags on 3/3/2017.
Pumpkin
 New England Sugar Pie
22' 11"2' 11" x 2' 11"Fruit weighs 4-5 pounds. Heirloom seeds from Baker Creek 2017
Pumpkin
 Connecticut Field
22' 11"2' 11" x 2' 11"100 days to maturity Sow in place, 1" deep and five seeds per hill. Thin to best 3 plants when seedlings are 2-3" tall. 5-10 days to germinate. http://www.almanac.com/plant/pumpkins Heirloom seeds from Baker Creek 2017
Radish 103"3" x 7"
Spinach 357"5" x 11"
Squash (Summer)
 Straightneck
21' 11"1' 11" x 1' 11"45 days to maturity Sow in place 1" deep and 3' spacing. Heavy feeders - heavily amend soil with manure/compost Heirloom seeds from Baker Creek 2017 Total failure. Lost everything to squash beetles. Have a better plan for next year.
Squash (Winter)
 Waltham Butternut
22' 11"2' 11" x 2' 11"110-120 days to maturity. Draw your garden soil into a hill about 18 inches high. This allows the soil to heat around the seeds and roots. Your soil should be well amended and well fertilized since butternut squash plants are heavy feeders. Plant five or six seeds per hill about 4 inches apart and 1 inch deep. Keep the soil moist, but not soggy. In about 10 days, the seeds will sprout. When theyre about 6 inches high, thin out the weakest leaving three plants per hill. Heirloom seeds from Baker Creek 2017 Lost one and half hills to squash bugs. 8/2/2017 - changed my tactic for dealing with the squash bugs to manually removing and killing as many as possible. Put them in a cup of soapy water or squished them Scraped off eggs and put those in the cup too. Also removed as much dead plant material as I could find to reduce their hiding places. 8/4/2017 - So far, there are two squashes developing
Sunflower
 Red Sun
2411"11" x 11"Heirloom seeds from Baker Creek 2017 Soak seeds until they swell before planting. Direct sow seeds 1-2 weeks before last frost.
Thyme 111"11" x 1' 3"
Tomato (Small)
 Roma VF
201' 7"1' 5" x 1' 11"Roma, Sun Gold and Cherry tomatoes planted here. Next year they need to be on the other side of the planting area. Too much shade from the Walnut tree in this position. All plants produced a reasonable amount with the Cherries outproducing all other varieties. Next year, either start the marigolds indoors for transplanting, or sow seeds outdoors early enough for them to get a head start on the tomatoes.
Tomato (Small)
 Cherokee Purple
111' 7"1' 5" x 1' 11"These did not produce well at all. One plant was very stunted, produced two tomatoes that were promptly eatern by a horn worm. The others only produced a couple of tomatoes each. However, the tomatoes were a beautful color and quite tasty.
Turnip
 Purple Top White Globe
67"5" x 11"
Turnip 127"5" x 11"
Zucchini
 Fordhook Zucchini
21' 11"1' 11" x 1' 11"57 days to maturity Sow in place at a depth of 1" and spacing of 3'. Heavy feeders - heavily amend soil with manure/compost Heirloom seeds from Baker Creek 2017 Total failure. Planted seeds three times and lost them all to squash beetles. Have a better plan for next year.
