Plant List

 PlantNumberSpacingSpacing in RowsNotes
Apple (Dwarf) 36' 6"6' 6" x 6' 6"Prune towards the end of the season to remove any dead or overcrowded branches and to shape if required.
Asparagus 61' 5"1' 5" x 1' 5"
Basil 747"5" x 9"Make a late spring planting of seedlings started indoors or purchased. In summer, after the soil is warm, sow more basil wherever you want it to grow. Cover transplants with flowerpots to shade them from strong sun for 2 days or so. To keep new leafy branches coming on, pinch off the upright flower spikes as they appear. Harvest leaves a few at a time as you need them in the kitchen. In midsummer, cut plants back by half to stimulate new growth, and make big batches of pesto with the trimmings.
Beans (Bush Snap) 269"5" x 1' 1"Mix an organic fertilizer into the soil before planting, using rates given on the label. Supplemental fertilizer seldom required. Succession Plant 1/2 beds
Beans (Pole) 269"5" x 1' 1"
Blueberry 102' 11"2' 11" x 2' 11"Plant in mid-fall or early winter when it's not too cold for a little root growth to help them establish. May need potash (potassium) adding, particularly if the leaves start to brown at the edges. After harvesting prune the bush back to five leaves on each side shoot and remove any dead or overcrowded branches to 'open up' the plant.
Broccoli 81' 5"1' 5" x 1' 5"Sow indoors in early spring, and set out while the soil is still cool. Sow fall broccoli indoors in summer, and set out when the plants are 3 weeks old. Mix composted manure or another high-nitrogen compost into the soil before planting. When heads begin to form, feed with a liquid plant food.
Broccoli (Purple Sprouting) 51' 11"1' 11" x 1' 11"Sow fall broccoli indoors in summer, and set out when the plants are 3 weeks old. Mix composted manure or another high-nitrogen compost into the soil before planting. When heads begin to form, feed with a liquid plant food. Use a sharp knife to harvest the primary head when the beads are plump and well-filled. Many varieties produce numerous smaller side shoots after the primary head is cut.
Cabbage (Fall Red) 42' 9"2' 7" x 2' 11"Drench every two weeks with an organic liquid fertilizer. Sow in summer for harvesting in the fall.
Cabbage (Summer) 91' 7"1' 5" x 1' 9"Drench every two weeks with an organic liquid fertilizer.
Carrot 7503"3" x 5"Sow direct into soil in spring. Make a second sowing for a fall crop in mid to late summer.
Cauliflower 121' 7"1' 5" x 1' 11"
Cucumber 161' 11"1' 11" x 1' 11"Drench with a liquid organic fertilizer when plants begin to bloom heavily.
Dill 427"5" x 9"Drench with a liquid organic fertilizer when plants are 4 inches tall. Start seeds indoors in individual containers, or sow seeds outdoors half an inch deep and 2 inches apart. Gradually thin seedlings to proper spacing, and eat your thinnings. Older seedlings are difficult to transplant successfully. Gather and dry leaves when plants are 10 inches tall. Use a paper bag to harvest seeds when they change from green to tan and fall freely from their umbels.
Fruit (Dwarf Tree)
 Pear
39' 10"9' 10" x 9' 10"
Fruit (Dwarf Tree) 39' 10"9' 10" x 9' 10"
Garlic 805"3" x 9"In fall, plant individual cloves 4 inches deep with the pointed ends up. Cover the planting with at least 3 inches of mulch. Dig up bulbs in summer when one third of the leaves become dry and lose their green color. Shake off soil, and cure whole plants dry in a warm, shady place for two weeks before trimming and storing the garlic bulbs.
Lettuce (Crisphead) 219"7" x 11"Drench plants with a mix-with-water plant food once a month. Pull up entire plants and use a sharp knife to lop off the roots. Always harvest in the morning, when the leaves are cool and full of moisture.
Lettuce (Leaf) 1203"3" x 5"
Melon 42' 11"2' 11" x 2' 11"
Nasturtium 1911"11" x 11"
Peas 3483"3" x 7"
Pepper 281' 1"11" x 1' 3"Mix an organic fertilizer into the planting holes as you transplant peppers. Feed every two weeks with a liquid feed after the plants begin to blossom and set fruit. Start indoors, and set out seedlings when the soil is settled and warm. Mulch to keep soil lightly moist at all times.
Potatoes (Maincrop) 351' 5"1' 1" x 2' 5"When the plants begin to bloom, feel under the mulch for little new potatoes. Harvest often as the plants begin to die back. Gather potatoes on a cloudy day, and cover them to protect them from exposure to light.
Radish 1503"3" x 7"
Spinach 607"5" x 11"
Squash (Summer) 101' 11"1' 11" x 1' 11"Drench plants with a liquid fertilizer when they begin to blossom and set fruits.
Strawberry 571' 7"1' 5" x 1' 11"In fall and again in early spring, topdress established plants with rich compost or an organic fertilizer. Allow plants to rest in midsummer.
Sunflower 911"11" x 11"
Tomato (Small) 151' 7"1' 5" x 1' 11"Weekly liquid feed or seaweed drench from mid summer onwards.
Zucchini 141' 11"1' 11" x 1' 11"Drench plants with a liquid fertilizer when they begin to blossom and set fruits.
