Plan Notes

3-24-12 Put plastic over the beds # 7 and 10 to solarize to try to get rid of black spot and blight. Planted potatoes and moved the dirt from that box and put it in Box 19. Need more mix in most of the boxes. Would have been a great day to fill them because it wasn't windy but I don't have enough compost. Sigh! Truck is in the shop to be fixed. 3/25/12 8:00am: planted indoors 12 cantalope, 12 cucumbers, and 12 yellow squash. Worked in the garden from about 2:30-6:30. Took leaves off beds. Topdressed asparagus and rhubarb. Plantings in box 8 (see individual plants). Bobbie and Ron Ellis came to see the garden. Loaned Bobbie my extra copy of Squarefoot Gardening book to look at. 3/26/12 Want to be in the garden again but I have to work. :( 5-7-12 Bought a bunch of plants at Yutzy's today. I will try to itemize them now. 5-9-12 Planted 14 Tomoto plants from Yutzy's. I have labeled them in my notebook (what is where) but don't have time to do it here yet. Mom is coming Friday and I want to get the house clean! 6-2-12 Went to the garden yesterday and the Swiss Chard in Box 1 that was about 2-3 feet hight was eaten down to about 1 foot and most of the leaves were gone. Left is a one inch thick purple stalk that is about a foot high with only a couple leaves. The Swiss Chard in box 3 had about 4 plants eaten down to just short little stalks. I sprayed liquid fence around the perimeter of the garden. I went out today and the whole row of swiss chard was finished off. :( Picked the beets that were attacked and got the green top ones. Had several that were a fairly good size. Maybe like a Kiwi size. 6-3-12 The rest of the beet tops were open. Put coffee grounds around them today. Not much left to eat. 6-16-12 Casey helped me most of the morning clearing out the old compost pile at the front of the garden near box 3 and 6. Wanted that cleaned up because it looked so trashy and weeds kept growing out of it. Still need to do more cleaning but... it is in progress. As we got the boxes placed, Shane was out there by then, it was 2:00 and we got a huge thunderstorm so we didn't get to smooth the dirt around the boxes. Will have to wait until it dries out now. Really needed the rain as it has been so dry. Started mulching the beds with leaves and started on the tomatoes in box 19. As we finished and moved to the next box, we say a grub worm and Casey asked if it was good or bad. He then told me that he knew at least one went in the tomato box. We searched with no luck and then decided not to mulch anymore as we found about 15 of them and put them in a cup. I was going to give them to Matt for bait but they drowned when the downpour came. Not sure what to do about it all. Paul tried to find us some Nemotoads but couldn't. He did buy me 6 bags of coarse vermiculite. Yeah!!! 6-20-12 Hot all day and finally got the energy to go out and fill the boxes. It felt good and I planted my sad 2 remaining blueberry bushes. Sophie came while I was working and loaded up several wheelbarrow loads of compost and helped me mix it with the peat and vermiculite. It is so good to have her in the garden with me. I worked until dark. It felt good and I really felt like I had accomplished something. 6-24-12 The swiss chard has come back and actually picked some the other day. Hope the deer stay away. Today I picked my first mess of beans. Couldn't fill a quart size bag but a good handful for a first pick. Also picked a red tomato. None of the others are even turning red and I found one. Shane, Casey, and I shared it in the garden. Pure ecstasy! Picked a pepper today and also a white onion that was planted in the asparagus box. It is a good size, white, but I should have let it grow more. Don't know what I was thinking. Casey mowed the garden today and it looks so good! Love it. Just need to get the junk cleared away. Planted 4 squares of green beans in box 22.

Pepper 141
Potatoes (Maincrop) 591planted 3-24-12. The whole box. Homemade and storebought compost. Organic humus from Lowe's. Am debating straw vs manure fill in. Will probably use manure to start. 5-7-12 I totally covered the plants with Mel's Mix and it really worked, they popped right up within a day or so and had to be covered again. Now the whole box is full of dirt and I will just let the plants grow the rest of the way. 10" of potatoes should grow along the stalks. Sophie has part of a box right next to it planted too. It was so amazing how fast they came through the dirt. It was a pain to have to mix up the Mel's Mix in the wheelbarrow each time, it would take about 3 mixes to cover them each time. I'm looking forward to seeing how they turn out. Hope no diseases come. 6-24-12. Some of the plants looked like they were dying but new growth has also happened so some look relal good.
