I designed this garden for a beginner gardener. I've chosen plants that are easy to grow. This garden is for a friend who loves spicy food, so I've included lots of chili peppers. You can substitute bell peppers for some of the chilis, or add more tomatoes or Malabar spinach if you prefer. The only missing ingredient is garlic, which will need to be planted in the fall for next spring. Onions, marigolds and green onions were incuded to deter pests from aphids to deer, and to improve flavor of the Malabar spinach, peppers and tomatoes.
This garden is designed to fit in one of my raised bed planters made from 2' x 8' cold frames purchased from Gardeners Supply which sits directly on the soil, but any garden bed configuration can be used. I prefer my beds to be no larger than 3' wide so I can easily reach all plants. If you're building a raised bed from your own lumber, Lowes carries inexpensive cedar fence boards that are 6' long. These lend themselves well to 3' x 3', 2' x 4' , or 3' x 6' configurations. Just remember that the Malabar spinach, tomato and pepper plants can get pretty large, so place them toward the North end (back) of the bed so that they don't block light and access to the smaller plants. You will also need to provide supports for the tomatoes and chili peppers and a trelis for the Malabar spinach. Raised beds are optional (you can plant directly in the ground after digging in some compost) but they can help to protect your garden from being trampled by people and pets. Enjoy!
