Example of a 10'x10' plot of an Indian "three sisters" garden, adding in sunflowers (also grown by native Americans) as a "fourth sister" These plots can be used like tiles to fill out larger garden areas - this plan has 5' pathways in between the plots, but these would be eventually covered by the squash & melons. Because of this, plant summer squash on the outside perimeter where they are easier to harvest, leaving winter squash and melons the center area to take over.
