Garlic (Allium sativum) - Music (Porcelain hardneck) 70 ibs of organic Music garlic required for planting ~2800 cloves. This plan will occupy approximately 2000 sq. feet of 1 acre (43,560/2000 = 1/20 of 1 acre)for 2013 fall planting, 2 weeks before final frost. Plant spacing is 6 inches with 10 inch spacing between rows for easier weeding. A successful 2014 harvest should produce 2800 bulbs X 4-5 cloves/bulb yielding approximately 11,200 cloves (4 X 2800). This yield would be replanted in the fall of 2014 which would occupy approximately 8000 sq. feet of 1 acre (43,560/8000 = 5/20 of 1 acre (approximately 1/4 acre). A successful 2015 harvest should produce 11,200 bulbs X 4-5 cloves/bulb yielding approximately 44,800 cloves (4 X 11,200). This yield would be replanted in the fall of 2015 which would occupy approximately 32,000 sq. feet of 1 acre (43,560/32,000 = 15/20 of 1 acre (approximately 3/4 acre). A successful 2016 harvest should produce 44,800 bulbs X 4-5 cloves/bulb yielding approximately 179,200 cloves (4 X 44,800). In 2016, with 179,200 cloves, I would require 3 - 5 acres and be a supplier of both bulbs and seed. Scape Removal - remove scapes by pulling, breaking or cutting just after curling but before they straighten out approximately 3 weeks prior harvest. This wiil allow for garlic bulbs to mature a further 30 percent in size. The scapes are edible and a delicious delicacy enjoyed by many connoiseurs of fine food.
