Garden Plans > 2011: Quince Orchard

About this Garden Plan

Originally a steep heavy clay embankment, no top soil, no plants, unusable in wet weather. No dig gardening has created the beginnings of fertile soil. Draft plan outlines creating raised garden beds made out of sleepers and steel uprights. Quince trees will be established to provide shade in summer and Autumn fruit for our kitchen program. Extensive rhubarb beds will produce Autumn and Winter desserts for our students in their kitchen program. The garden is in full sun and to the east has a brick wall that radiates heat during the colder months. The area has heavy foot traffic and receives high levels of rain run off. All garden beds are designed for children to use easily and are 'double reach' meaning all parts of the garden can be reached by hand without leaning or stepping onto the garden. Double reach garden beds are 1m to 1.2m wide, a single reach garden bed is 60cm wide.
