Veggie Garden for Backyard. (This will be the first year putting in this garden. We are using the no-till, raised row method. with 3" of compost, 3" of top soil, 3" of mulch--mixed together for plants to grow in), and 3" of straw over plant area. Pathways will likely be mulch this year but I plan to bring in pea gravel). We will also be installing a drip irrigation system that will run from rainwater we collect from the top of our 30x50 foot shop and store in IBC totes.)
Our soil is trash. It is very heavy clay with rocks. So we are bringing in mushroom compost, top soil, mulch and straw. We will be adding leaves and all sorts of things this fall to increase the organic material and make the soil even better. I grew up summering near Elliott Coleman's farm on Cape Rosier, Maine--and am bringing a lot of what I learned from him here to our farm.)
